Summary

Activity Description:

Are you interested in emerging alternative therapies beyond traditional anti-inflammatory and opioid medications for treating pain? Oxytocin can alter the perception of pain associated with peripheral inflammation via the TRPV1 channel. Ketamine has a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist mechanism of action, and its effects on depression and chronic pain outlast the actual drug levels. Attend this session to learn about these and other treatments for pain management.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:

  1. Understand the mechanisms of action of emerging therapies for chronic pain conditions, including oxytocin, ketamine, magnesium, and methylene blue.
  2. Identify the different dosage forms, formulations, and considerations for the administration of oxytocin, ketamine, magnesium, and methylene blue.
  3. Recognize the potential benefits and side effects of using oxytocin, ketamine, magnesium, and methylene blue for the treatment of chronic pain conditions.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
