Summary

Activity Description:

Description: Trying to keep a patient’s blood pressure under control is sometimes like playing a game of whack-a-mole. You think it's under control with one medication when before long it rises again, often requiring combination drug therapy to keep it at goal. With so many drug classes to choose from, it can feel like throwing darts at the wall to see which one sticks. However, treatment approach need not be random. Develop a game plan based on individual patient characteristics and compelling indications so you can hit the bull’s eye on the first try.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:

  1. List first-line agents used in the treatment of hypertension with and without compelling indications.
  2. Describe counseling points for different classes of oral antihypertensive medications.
  3. Formulate a pharmacotherapy plan for patients based on patient-specific characteristics and compelling indications.

At the completion of this activity, technicians will be able to:

  1. List first-line agents used in the treatment of hypertension with and without compelling indications.
  2. Describe different classes of oral antihypertensive medications.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
